Steam rising, the scent of root vegetables and a sense that food could anchor us to the present moment.Q: If your book had a soundtrack, what three songs would have to be on it?Fields of Gold by Sting - for its warmth and harvest calm.Bloom by The Paper Kites - because it feels like growth and renewal.Colours of the Wind by Judy Kuhn - for grounding flow and mindful self-reflection.Q: What rule of writing do you break on purpose?The book is also a journal so I left space throughout for readers to self-reflect and discover their own eating patterns, habits and behaviours, guiding them towards understanding, acceptance and self-love.Q: What’s the most unexpected place your writing has taken you—geographically, emotionally, or otherwise?Emotionally, it took me back to my parents’ kitchen. It became a reflection of the people who nourished me before I knew what mindful eating was.Q: What’s the strangest bit of research you’ve ever had to do for your book?The strangest research I did was asking different farmers how they decide when to bring certain produce to the market. Everyone had their own answer, some checked the weather, some just ‘knew.’ Those short conversations taught me a lot about how seasonal eating actually works from a farm to table perspective.Q: What part of the writing process do you secretly look forward to, even if you pretend you don’t?Editing. The quiet, meditative pruning of words. It’s like preparing a meal by chopping, stirring, tasting and refining.Q: What non-writing habit improves your writing the most?Spending time in nature. Observing the changing patterns of the seasons reminds me that good writing, like the natural world, has rhythm and pause.Q: What’s the biggest misconception about mindful eating?That it’s a diet. It’s not - it’s a relationship. It’s about listening, not restricting. My book tries to shift that conversation.Q: Which tiny detail in the book means the most to you personally; something readers might easily miss?The dedication to my parents. It’s a small line at the front, easy for readers to overlook, but it carries everything: gratitude, love and the foundation of who I am.Q: What non-writing habit most improves your writing?Walking outdoors keeps my mind sharp and my observations grounded. It’s research without realising it!Q: What nearly made the final draft but didn’t, and why?I nearly included a chapter about foraging, because it’s such an interesting way to connect with the seasons. But the more I wrote, the more I realised it would send readers down a whole different path. It felt too specialised for this book, so I cut it and kept the focus on seasonal eating.Q: Which author (living or dead) would completely understand your work and why does that amuse you?Thich Nhat Hanh would completely understand my work. His writing on mindfulness captures exactly what I’m trying to share. While his wisdom is profound and serene, my book is full of very practical tools for real‑life moments.Q: If your book were a place readers could physically visit, what should they pack?If my book were a place, it would be a bustling farmers market at the height of the season. Readers should pack a sturdy tote bag, a notebook for jotting down inspiration and an appetite for tasting - because every page is about noticing, enjoying and savoring what’s fresh and in season.Q: What’s the single bravest decision you made while writing this book?The bravest decision I made was focusing on practical tools rather than just theory. It would have been easier to write a book full of ideas about mindfulness, but I wanted readers to walk away with simple, actionable ways to eat more consciously every day.Q; What’s the biggest misconception people have about your genre and how does your work challenge it?The biggest misconception about mindful eating is that it’s just about eating less or following strict rules. In reality, it’s about awareness, enjoyment and connection to your food.Q: If your future self, ten years from now, sent you a note about your writing, what would it say?Keep noticing. On the night he died, I was on a train from London to Hampshire knowing that he had died and there was nothing I could do. I needed to talk to him. So I wrote to him on my notes app. 'I’m on a journey to see you, Sam' was my first message.Q &nbsp;If your book had a soundtrack, what three tracks would absolutely have to be on it, and why?A That's the perfect but most cruel question of all! How can you narrow it down to just three? As it's Sam's book, I guess I'd have to choose the last song he listened to on his Spotify: 'Rewind' by Paulo Nutini. It’s fitting because we’d do anything to rewind time. Then I'm picking some of my soppy songs - sorry, Sam. Something like 'Pictures of You' by The Cure. Pictures and memories are all I have left, and they bring my bro back to life for a moment. Then we'll go with something like 'Listen to the Lion' by Van the man Morrison – because I had to dig deep and listen to the king of the jungle inside me to roar these words out.Q What rule of writing do you break on purpose and what do you get out of breaking it?A I spell words incorrectly because why the hell not! I like playing around with words, making up new ones, like the bossman, Salman Rushdie.Q What’s the most unexpected place your writing has taken you; geographically, emotionally, or otherwise?A Tesco express! Never thought I'd be writing a book whilst getting a meal deal in a supermarket.Q Which character (or idea) in your book argued with you the most while you were writing? Who won?A My own guilt, which always wins.Q What’s the strangest bit of research you’ve ever had to do for your book?A Not research for the book exactly, but I do remember writing about how I'd googled: 'how to have a wedding when you're an introvert'.&nbsp;Q What part of the writing process do you secretly look forward to, even if you pretend you don’t?A Has to be the editing. I'm a perfectionist. I love tweaking things and calming the chaos.Q When did you realise the story was no longer yours alone—that it belonged to readers too?A When people in the MD community said they needed to read this.Q What’s a belief about storytelling that you’ve completely changed your mind about in the last five years?A That you don't have to be articulate. I'm crap at articulating myself in person. But when writing to Sam there's no pressure.Q Which tiny detail in the book means the most to you personally; something readers might easily miss?A When Sam comes alive for a second. When he replies to me.Q What non-writing activity most improves your writing, even if it makes no logical sense?A Long, aimless walks. I need one write now, actually.Q If you could have one reader reaction in perpetuity; laughter, tears, outrage, scribbling in the margins...what would it be?A I'd love to have people scribbling in the margins. Or dog-earring the pages like there's no tomorrow.&nbsp;Q What nearly made the final draft but didn’t, and why?A All of Sam's lists! The editor made a bold decision and it helps the book read better - so thanks!&nbsp; Q Which author (living or dead) would completely understand your work and why does that amuse you?A Tough one! I guess someone who knows grief, and how it can be brutal and mundane. Someone like Isabelle Allende – one of my favs. I'm sure she'd get it. Book Launch Speech – Introducing Irish author, Cullen Kennedy and his debut fantasy novel, 'Fireborn. Most of us, when we set out to write a book, imagine long hours hunched over a laptop, fingers tapping away, coffee cups piling up, and ideas spilling faster than we can type them. But Cullen didn’t have that luxury. His words weren’t written by hand. They were written by will.Cullen, as many of you know, lives with multiple physical disabilities and uses a wheelchair. But that chair has never been a limit since we’ve come to know him. It’s been a platform from which he has built worlds. And the tool that made that possible wasn’t a pen or a keyboard, but eye gaze technology. Yes. Every word, every sentence, every chapter of this dark and complex novel was written not through touch, but through determination. Stories of Love, Loss And Menopause" by Dr. Michael D. Meyer, sets out with a clear and ambitious goal. As stated in its introduction, the book is intended to serve as a "fictional blueprint" and a "platform of discussion" designed to break the "shrouded bubble of silence" that so often surrounds menopause. Rather than being a clinical text, it deploys fictional narratives to explore a universal life stage that profoundly impacts individuals and their loved ones. This analysis deconstructs three primary thematic currents woven throughout these stories: 1. the profound impact on intimate relationships, 2. the transformative personal journeys of all characters involved, and 3. a sharp critique of the societal culture of ignorance that compounds the suffering associated with this transition. The Erosion and Reconstruction of Intimate Relationships The stories in this collection consistently frame menopause not as a solitary medical condition but as a relational phenomenon that fundamentally tests the foundations of marriage, family, and friendship. His older brother, MJ, reacts with anger, roaring that his mother "forced him out by being a bitch" before moving in with his father, illustrating the divisive impact on siblings. • Intergenerational Bonds: The dynamic between Ann and her mother, Una, in "Where's Mum?" highlights how even established family relationships become strained, with interactions marked by "loud talking, almost shouting." The crucial turning point for reconciliation is catalyzed not by the adults, but by Ben’s tearful plea to his mother. Ann only agrees to trust Una and see a specialist after she collects a sobbing Ben into her arms and admits, "You and Nana are right. I need to do something different." These narratives argue that while menopause can shatter familial bonds, it can also create the conditions for their realignment, often through the unexpected intervention of the family’s youngest members. Ryan and Fiona reconnect through this shared physical challenge, creating a space for healing that culminates in Fiona’s powerful apology: "I had absolutely no control over my feelings or actions." • Therapeutic Intervention: "Beyond Marriage Counselling" details a more structured approach. Maggie and JP engage in formal marriage counselling and attend a Tantra retreat to consciously rebuild their intimacy, demonstrating a commitment to using external tools and guidance to repair their bond. • Informed Partnership: The resolution in "A Happy Ending!" presents the collection's ideal outcome. John and Helen's marriage is saved after both independently seek education about menopause. Armed with knowledge, they are able to reframe the crisis as a shared journey, approaching it together with patience and mutual understanding. The GP in "Fog-Outs" takes blood samples to "determine the best course of action," while the specialist in "A Happy Ending!" explains that it may "take a few attempts to see what works best." The narrative posits that in direct response to the failures of this conventional medical paradigm, many characters are compelled to explore alternative paths to healing. Exploring Alternative and Integrative Paths The narratives validate non-pharmaceutical and integrative approaches, presenting them as legitimate and sometimes superior routes to well-being. This turn toward alternative modalities is framed as a direct consequence of the shortcomings of the conventional medical system, empowering individuals to reclaim agency over their health. • Holistic Retreats: Several stories feature healing retreats as catalysts for change. This is backed by research, such as a 2016 Swedish study by Lindh et al., which found that while 62% of consumers perceived plastic as the worst environmental offender compared to materials like glass or paper, their actual purchasing decisions were more influenced by practical factors.&nbsp;When it comes to choosing a product, attributes like packaging that is 'easy to open' and 'suitable for home storage' are often more important to shoppers than the material itself. This highlights a major gap between our general environmental anxieties and the practical, convenience-driven decisions we make in the supermarket aisle every day.2. You're a Great Recycler, But Your Efforts Might Be Wasted There is good news when it comes to our intentions. Research conducted by Anne Hayden found that an overwhelming 95.7% (66 out of 69) of surveyed shoppers in Dublin, Ireland, make the effort to recycle their plastic food packaging. This indicates a strong public commitment to doing the right thing.The surprising twist, however, is a major knowledge gap about what is actually recyclable. When the Irish shoppers who knew some plastics couldn't be recycled were asked to provide an example of a non-recyclable item, the single most common response was "Don't Know." This uncertainty points to a breakdown in public information and labeling clarity. The issue is compounded by industry practices; in the same study, two of the three Irish food companies surveyed confirmed they do not use recyclable plastic food packaging, stating that the price is "too high." This reveals a frustrating disconnect: consumers are diligently trying to recycle packaging that producers, citing high costs, never made recyclable in the first place.3. We're Worried About Health Risks, But There's a Major Disconnect The potential health risks associated with plastic food packaging are a common concern, but research from Ireland reveals a significant disconnect between the views of consumers, producers, and regulators.• The Consumer View: A significant portion of Irish consumers (43% of the sample in Hayden's study) believe there are health effects from plastic packaging. Crucially, when asked to specify what those effects were, the most common answer was that they "did not know." This finding points to a general public anxiety that is driven more by vague apprehension than by specific, actionable information.• The Industry View: The perspective from producers is starkly different. All three Irish food companies surveyed for the study stated unequivocally that there were "no health effects from plastic food packaging."• The Regulator View: The official position comes from the Food Safety Authority of Ireland (FSAI). In an interview, Dr. Bernard Hegarty of the FSAI clarified the agency's stance: The issue, therefore, is not necessarily that plastic packaging is dangerous, but that a "trust gap" exists. Consumers are uncertain, producers are certain of safety, and regulators are confident in their guidelines. This gap highlights a public unease that official assurances have not fully resolved.4. Plastic Packaging Is Solving a Problem That Might Be Bigger Than Plastic Waste To fully understand plastic's role, we must examine the primary purpose highlighted by the research itself: preventing food waste. Plastic packaging performs several critical functions: it prevents tampering, maintains freshness, prevents contamination from microorganisms, and extends the shelf life of food. These benefits are directly connected to another massive global environmental issue.&nbsp;As the research notes, "Food packaging prevents bacterial contamination, which allows for a longer shelf life and eventually will reduce food waste." While plastic waste is a visible and pressing problem, food waste has an enormous environmental impact of its own. Citing a powerful statistic from the literature, the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) estimated that thirty-four million tonnes of food were thrown away in 2010 in the United States alone. This presents a complex trade-off. We must weigh the environmental impact of plastic packaging against its crucial role in reducing the staggering environmental problem of food waste.Conclusion: Beyond the Bin. Rethinking Our Plastic Future Our relationship with plastic food packaging is filled with contradictions. We worry about its impact on the planet but prioritize convenience. We diligently recycle without always knowing if our efforts matter. We harbor vague health concerns that are not shared by producers or regulators. And we often overlook the vital role plastic plays in preventing the colossal problem of food waste.The path forward is not simply about eliminating plastic, but about innovating it. The study highlights promising developments on the horizon, including "biodegradable," "active," and "intelligent packaging." These technologies aim to extend shelf life, monitor food safety, and reduce environmental persistence. As packaging technology evolves, how do we build a system, through regulation, consumer pressure, and corporate responsibility, that values both the plastic that preserves our food and the innovation that preserves our planet?
