<h2>Eco-Friendly Book Production</h2><p>This is a theme that has long been on my mind and in consciousness having edited and contributed a chapter to the recently published book, 'Conversations on Plastic' by Anne Hayden (ShadowScript Publications, 2023). Did you know, studies estimate about 1.4 billion trees end up in landfills every year, because of product packaging and other paper waste? (Cushman-Roisin, 2022). Estimates suggest anywhere from 4 billion trees to 8 billion trees used for paper every year (8billiontrees.com). That's a mind staggering 42 million trees being cut down daily for both paper and other products.&nbsp;</p><p>Despite this, I think it's fair to say that people, in general, are becoming more aware of the environmental impact of their choices across areas they may not have considered before (WorldCounts, 2022). This is a good thing and includes the books they read. Eco-friendly book production is gaining traction as indie and mainstream publishers and readers seek sustainable options and we've been at the forefront of this for several years now at ShadowScript Publications. It helps reduce the carbon footprint and conserves natural resources, ensuring that the resources used can be replenished naturally. You'd be amazed at how resourceful our environment and sustainability team of Conor, Clara and Anne have become in their planning and strategy sessions.&nbsp;</p><p>An average paperback book has around three times the climate impact at around 1 kilogram of equivalent CO2. That's the same as charging 122 smart phones, or making two café lattes. Wow! Just think about that for a moment. According to 2023 data from the literary industry research group WordsRated, when it comes to pulp and paper, print book publishing is the world's third-largest industrial greenhouse gas emitter, and 32 million trees are felled each year in the United States alone to make paper for books. It also promotes the use of renewable resources (Bologna &amp; Aquino, 2020). Well, we can include recycled paper, FSC-certified paper, and soy-based inks in our books just as some examples. Recycled paper is made from post-consumer waste and this reduces the need for virgin paper and helps conserve forests.</p><p>FSC-certified paper comes from responsibly managed forests. The Forest Stewardship Council (FSC) ensures that the paper meets strict environmental standards. It explores the concept of designing products so that, after their useful life, they can be repurposed and enter a new cycle of use.&nbsp;</p><p><strong>About recycling: Recycling and Recycling of Engineering Materials: Recycling for Sustainable Developments</strong> by Md. Nizam Uddin, E. Asmatulu, Waseem S. Khan, Ramazan Asmatulu</p><p>In recent years, significant efforts have been made in both industry and academia to advance material recycling. Many countries strive to reduce waste through recycling. This book highlights and explores the latest developments in recycling processes and modern techniques.</p><p><strong>How Bad Are Bananas?: The Carbon Footprint of Everything</strong> by Mike Berners-Lee</p><p>Have you ever wondered about the CO2 footprint of your breakfast or ski trip? This book provides the CO2 footprints of various activities, offering both eye-opening and entertaining reading!&nbsp;</p><h3>Challenges and Solutions</h3><p>While there are many benefits, there are also challenges. Sustainable materials While there are numerous benefits, there are also challenges. Sustainable materials can be more expensive and difficult to source. Carl-Otto Gensch's research shows that producing ten 200-page books from fresh-fiber paper results in about eleven kilograms of CO2 emissions. While the production of a new book requires the destruction of precious natural resources and results in CO2 being released into the atmosphere, buying a used book skips the production process and reduces its carbon footprint</p><p>Publishers can work with suppliers to find cost-effective options. Purchasing three paper books a month for four years produces around 1,074 kg of CO2in comparison. A consumer could purchase around 22.5 paper books before it would be more environmentally friendly to use a Kindle. </p><p>Printing to order (print on demand) rather than printing to projection reduces waste at each step of the process - shipping, stocking, storing and potentially destroying books. Ensure the printing ink is water-based and delivered in reusable containers that are recyclable. Print on recycled paper. ‍</p><p>They can also educate readers about the importance of sustainable materials. The number one problem? Mass consumption. </p><p>Indeed, the average Ecological Footprint of Irish residents is 4.8 global hectares per person, whilst the world average is 2.8 global hectares per person, so we are not doing very well.&nbsp;</p><p>Sustainability in publishing means adopting more responsible and efficient practices that reduce the environmental footprint of the industry and its products, while also ensuring its economic viability and social equity. 1 ton of non-coated, not recycled office/print paper requires approximately 24 trees for production whilst a ton of coated, paper, like the pages that are used for magazines, needs over 15 trees to produce. Choose a User-Friendly Bot</h3><p>Not all AI bots are easy to use. Choose one that is user-friendly and has a clear interface. 10 Practical Tips for Navigating the World of AI Bots

<h3>Getting Started</h3><p>I've helped many authors in writing their memoirs and am currently working with a few new clients in completing their manuscripts. I've a great vantage point, as I can detach myself from these scripts and ask, what would interest a reader?&nbsp;</p><h3>Understand Your Purpose</h3><p>Before you start writing your memoir, it's important to understand why you are writing it. Are you sharing a life lesson? Documenting a personal journey? Knowing your purpose will guide your writing and keep you focused.</p><p>Perhaps the first question worth asking is, will a memoir sell? Well, experts agree that something new happened to the memoir genre in the 1990s with many observers linking a boom in this area to the publication of Limerick's own, Frank McCourt, and his bestselling, 'Angela’s Ashes' which was published towards the end of that decade in 1999. </p><p><em>Narrator: [First lines] When I look back on my childhood, I wonder how my brothers and I managed to survive at all. It was, of course, a miserable childhood. The happy childhood is hardly worth telling. Worse than the ordinary miserable childhood is the miserable Irish childhood.</em></p><p>Of course, Angela's Ashes achieved a Pulitzer Prize. This is, of course, an exception and shouldn't be used as a standard event.&nbsp;</p><h3>Identify Your Audience</h3><p>Having stated the above, think about who might read your memoir. Are you writing for family and friends, or a much broader audience? Understanding your audience will help you decide on the tone and style of your writing. And, of course, the content.&nbsp;</p><p>Allison Williams makes the point that memoir readers are loyal to an author, but not necessarily to the genre, and this is a really important point. Memoirists have to pay a great deal of attention to enticing a potential reader with the story of their life itself (famous people) or the story they tell about their experience (everyone else, i.e. us!). </p><p>When I've visited bookstores in Galway, Dublin, London, Edinburgh, Madrid, Lisbon, Berlin, Stockholm, Montreal or New York, I've noticed over and over that 'memoir' is limited to one small section amid shelf after shelf of fiction and children's books. Memoirs put one in a smaller market and when one looks at the commercial end of things, it's obvious that deals for all types of memoir (celebrities and “normal” authors) have, depressingly, been decreasing in recent years (<a href="https://brevity.wordpress.com/2024/03/12/the-hard-sell/" data-mce-href="https://brevity.wordpress.com/2024/03/12/the-hard-sell/">https://brevity.wordpress.com/2024/03/12/the-hard-sell/</a>).&nbsp;</p><h3>Outline Your Story</h3><p>So, having stated the above, if you want your memoir to be noticed, I mean really noticed and make those all important sales, creating an outline is crucial. It will help you organise your thoughts and ensure your memoir has a clear structure. Start with major events and then fill in the details. Do up a timeline so you don't miss things. Readers will connect more with your story if you are genuine. Don't shy away from difficult truths; they add depth and authenticity to your narrative. You just have to consider how best to approach a particular event and, remember, there are always two perspectives on any incident and writing only your own with no sense of reflection does not serve you well as an author. No pain. No gain.&nbsp;</p><h3>Show, Don’t Tell</h3><p>Ooh. This is one of the 'biggies' in memoir writing. Use descriptive language to paint a picture for your readers. Instead of saying you were sad, describe how you felt and what you did. Be prepared to revise and edit your work multiple times. And, I mean multiple times. Cut out unnecessary details and ensure your narrative flows smoothly. We have received many manuscripts that have notes with them stating they are complete and it's shocking to see how much work needs to be done by our editorial team. Authors have to be prepared for the hard graft of writing and rewriting and, of course, fact checking. The Internet makes it possible to verify or, indeed, disprove, timelines, events, character involvement etc in far, far less time than the trip to the library or resource centre in one's town or city.&nbsp;</p><h3>Seek Feedback</h3><p>Getting feedback from others always provides valuable insights and nuggets. Share your work with trusted friends, colleagues or join a writing group. Constructive criticism will help you improve your memoir. It adds a dynamic element and helps readers connect with the characters. Make sure your dialogue is realistic and serves the narrative. Again, this is interesting. I've had two manuscripts sent to our offices in the past twelve months, in different genres, where the authors have used very colloquial language that roots their manuscripts and brings up issues of commercial viability in trying to get their books to a wider, international market. Obviously, there are some famous examples of books that successfully used such language such as Finnegan's Wake by our own James Joyce, and A girl is a Half-Formed Thing by Eimear McBride, and then Trainspotting by Irvine Welsh, A Clockwork Orange by Anthony Burgess, The End of San Francisco by Mattilda Bernstein to name but some. Have a read of some, of all, of these!&nbsp;</p><h3>Use a Consistent Voice</h3><p>Your voice is your unique style of writing. Keep it consistent throughout your memoir. <h3>Understanding the Role of Technology</h3><p>Technology is a central part of our lives. It changes how we work, communicate, and even relax. But with this very rapid change, many people feel lost or disconnected and there's lots of research in this space. </p><p>Let's look at perhaps the most ubiquitous piece of technology; the smartphone. In Ireland, mobile phones have become the preferred device for browsing shopping websites, making online purchases, online searches, banking and playing games. People here check their smartphones over 50 times daily.</p><p>The Deloitte Digital Consumer Trends report is an annual survey of consumers, which explores their digital usage and attitudes towards technology and is worth exploring here. A survey carried out in August 2023, with 1,000 people between the ages of [18 and 75] in Ireland was conducted and reports that 98% of 18-75-year-olds use their smartphone every day, with more than a third doing so during mealtimes and 74% saying they do so as soon as they wake up compared with 59% a year ago. Finding Purpose as an Author in a World of Technology

<h3>Starting my Day</h3><p>The life of a ghostwriter begins early. Mornings are often the most productive time for me. I usually get up around 7am and start off with a cup of coffee and a quick review of my tasks for the day. I check emails and respond to clients, which sets the tone for the rest of the day.&nbsp;</p><p>Next, I prioritise my assignments. Some projects have tight deadlines, while others allow more flexibility. I make a to-do list, noting the most urgent tasks at the top. This helps me stay focused and organised. Here's a life hack I learned years ago; take on the 'biggest' tasks first and don't put them off. The brain works well when underwhelmed for the day rather than overwhelmed. </p><p>Shamarukh Chowdhury, a senior doctoral student at Carleton University, in the US collected data from 300 undergraduate students and reported that students who use a to-do list more, procrastinate less. This was attributed to conscientiousness, including not being impulsive and staying self-disciplined. I spend a significant amount of time gathering information. This involves reading articles, books, and other resources. Accurate information is crucial for creating quality content. Actually, for the month of June, I've asked two of my team to read and review the same book with me. We've chosen 'Prophet Song' by Paul Lynch who recently won the booker award 2024. We'll meet at the end of the month and compare notes (what we liked/didn't like in terms of narrative and writing style, the overall story, plot development, character development etc and, of course, the cover and overall production). &nbsp;</p><p>Back to my typical day...Once I have enough data, I outline the content. An outline serves as a roadmap and helps me structure the piece logically. This step is important for maintaining a clear and coherent flow in the writing and is something I always share with my clients to ensure they are on board early in the process.</p><h3>Writing and Editing</h3><p>Here's the gravy. With the outline in place, I start writing. I aim to write in short, focused bursts which keeps my mind sharp and reduces fatigue. I also take regular breaks to avoid burnout. I update them on progress and seek their feedback. Clear communication helps in understanding their needs better. It also ensures the final content meets their expectations. I work in tracked changes facility which makes it a seamless process for my clients to get a sense of my thought process and substantive commentary on material.&nbsp;</p><p>Sometimes, quite a few revisions are necessary. I take client feedback seriously and make the required changes. This collaborative process enhances the quality of the final product.
