'still a bit of frost about' by Leo Quinn

Writing a book is often described as being a labour of love, a cathartic journey into the depths of one's soul. For me, this journey was a descent into the shadows of my past, a confrontation with the darkest corners of my childhood in Northern Ireland during my time spent under the ‘care’ of the system. My debut book, “Still a Bit of Frost About” is more than just a memoir, it is a testament to survival, resilience, and to the unyielding human spirit.
The Beginnings of a Harrowing Journey
Growing up amidst the chaos of Belfast's troubled streets, my early years were marred by the constant backdrop of conflict. The troubles, to various degrees of severity, affected every aspect of life and for me, I found that it permeated into my own home life. My parents, struggling with their own issues, could not provide the stability I needed. At a young age, I was placed in state care because of my mother’s inability to care for me. Instead of finding refuge, I encountered a world filled with emotional, physical, and sexual abuse—experiences that would shape my life in profound ways.

Navigating the Silence
The institutions that were established to protect me and others, were, in fact, places of horror. Speaking out was not an option; I learnt that silence was a survival mechanism. Each day was a test of endurance, a struggle to maintain some semblance of hope in an environment designed to crush it. Yet, amidst this darkness, I clung to the belief that there was a way out, that one day I would find the light.

A New Beginning
At 18, I left the care system and joined the army. Military life, with its discipline and structure, was a stark contrast to the chaos I had known. Traveling the world exposed me to new perspectives, but the scars of my past were always there, lurking just beneath the surface. Returning to Belfast years later, I faced my past head-on, determined to rebuild my life.

Healing Through Words
Writing “Still a Bit of Frost About” has been an essential part of my healing process. Each chapter is a step towards understanding and acceptance, a way to give voice to the silenced child within me. Through this book, I hope to offer solace to those who have walked similar paths and provide insight to those seeking to understand the complexities of growing up in such a tumultuous environment.

The Power of Storytelling
Stories have the power to heal, to connect, and to inspire. By sharing my journey, I aim to shed light on the often hidden and painful experiences of children in state care. I hope that this book serves as a beacon of hope, showing that despite the darkest of beginnings, there is a path to healing and redemption.

A Message of Hope
To anyone who finds themselves in the depths of despair, remember this: you are not alone. There is strength within you, even when it feels like all hope is lost. Healing is possible, and the journey towards it is worth every step. My story is one of survival against the odds, and I hope that it inspires others to find their own paths from shadows to light.
